Altun Ha is a site that has many ruins and temples from the pre-classic and classic period of the Mayans. This site is located thirty-one miles North of Belize City. Archaeologists estimate that it was originally 1500 acres. The ruins were discovered by modern time archeologists in 1960. This area was an important trading and agricultural ground for Mayans. In this area, scientists estimate that 8,000 to 10,000 Mayans used to live here. Considering how big the Mayan Empire was and how many small and large cities they used to have this was an exceedingly large city for the Mayans. This was an important area for the Mayans until they abandoned this location towards the end of the Mayan Classic Period. There is a part of this city that is called the “Temple of the Green Tomb” and it contains a tomb of a king who lived around 600 AD. The biggest and one of the most important temples at these ruins was called “Temple of the Sun God”. Overall, this area was important to the Mayans, and scientists finding ancient ruins was a big discovery.
