British Honduras Hurricane
The British Honduras Hurricane of September 10, 1931 was one of the worst hurricanes in Belize history. It took place in Belize City. The total deaths were about 2500 people and left many more homeless. This is a big number, however, it was much less than expected considering that no warnings were given to the people of British Honduras. Some of the max speeds of the hurricane were 135 miles per hour, and it was categorized as a Category 4. During the hurricane and later, there was 5 feet of flooding because of some 20 feet tidal waves. 24 died in St. Georges Caye. The reason this many people died on a rather small island is because September 10th is a national holiday to celebrate the battle that happened on St. George's Caye. Even though the moment was bad, the aftermath was even worse. 70 percent of all Belize City properties were destroyed. At least all properties had some damage. A lot of radio facilities were destroyed, making it so that the country couldn’t connect with everyone. Since there were floods, a lot of the water that people would use for drinking was contaminated, which made water valuable and necessary. The U.S.A. and the U.K. set aside their differences and sent $2500 to all affected areas. Overall, the cost of the damage was 7.5 million U.S. dollars, it is important to note that this was during the great depression, and it is not today's economy.
