The Belize flag originated in 1819 under the British rule. On the current flag, there are red stripes on the top and bottom, and around the middle is blue. In the middle is a white disk that holds the coat of arms for Belize. On the coat of arms is a shield and 2 men surrounding the shield. The shield is split into 3 parts, paddle and maul on a white background, a saw and axe on a dark yellow background, and finally a ship sailing on a blue background. A fun fact is that the flag of Belize is the only independent nation that has 2 human beings on there flag. The 2 humans are Mestizo and Creole. They are holding an axe and log. They are all in front of a mahogany tree. Around the entire coat of arms is a green garland. On the bottom of the coat of arms is the phrase “Sub umbra floreo” which in English translates to “I will flourish in the shade”. The meaning of that phrase is about how forests and countries were established under British protection. The red and blue stripes represent the 2 main political parties in Belize. Red is for the party UDP and blue is for PUP. A lot of the stuff on the coat of arms is a tribute to the logging industry that led the British to settle in Belize. The garland has 50 leaves representing the year 1950 when resistance against the British started in Belize.
